Tua Tagovailoa’s latest concussion brings up questions on whether he should retire or continue playing. The Dolphins need to treat this with extreme caution for Tua’s health and should give him more time off than usual if Tua is persistent on continuing to play. If Tua is going to miss an extended period of time, the Dolphins need to do something different at quarterback as they cannot compete with Skylar Thompson as their quarterback. We’ll be looking at 4 options as a temporary replacement that the Miami Dolphins need to seriously consider in Tua’s absence.
#1: Reunion with Ryan Tannehill
Currently a free agent, Ryan Tannehill has said he’s waiting for the right opportunity. There’s no better opportunity than reuniting with his former team that he spent the first 7 years of his career with. This is the option that most Dolphins fans should want and unlike Miami in the last 20 years, Ryan Tannehill does have a playoff win under his belt.
#2: Trade for Trey Lance
We know Mike McDaniel loves picking up former San Francisco 49ers players and now he can get one at one of the most crucial positions on the field. The Cowboys gave Trey Lance essentially a tryout for other teams by letting him get playing time in the preseason. Lance looked good then & an upgrade over Miami’s current option of Skylar Thompson.
#3: Trade for Jimmy Garoppolo
Another former San Francisco 49ers player that would not mind taking over a starting job is Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo is currently backing up Matthew Stafford, but the Rams also have Stetson Bennett who is serviceable. If the Rams can get some draft capital for Jimmy G, this would be a win-win situation. Jimmy G does have one game left of a suspension to serve and then can slot in as the starter for Miami. We know he would like to be a starting quarterback in the league again.
#4: Convince Tom Brady to Come Out of Retirement
The least likely option of the group is convincing Tom Brady to leave his cushy broadcasting job and come back to playing. We know Brady misses playing, but it would need to be a lot of money and still ensure his broadcasting job is secure after. The circumstances that Miami would need to get Brady to come out are highly unlikely, but if they can pull off this feat that they failed to do a few years ago would certainly catapult them back to a Super Bowl Contender.
