We’ve just surpassed the All Star Break and the halfway point of the 2024 MLB Season. It’s been a crazy year with super teams, super rookies, and redemption stories, all of which are featured in the award races. We’ll be breaking down the main 4 award races for each league and predict our winners for each award.
AL MVP: Aaron Judge, New York Yankees
Leading all players in both home runs and RBIs, Aaron Judge is on pace for another monster season. With him likely to win his second MVP, the last time that a player not named Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani will have won this award was in the shortened 2020 season.
NL MVP: Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers
Looking to join Frank Robinson as the only player to win the MVP in both the AL & NL, Shohei is the odds on favorite to win the NL MVP this year. He’s on track to hit over .300 and is currently leading the NL in home runs. What’s even more impressive is Shohei is going to win this award in a season where he only bats and doesn’t pitch. When he’s back to doing both, we expect him to be the favorite every year to win this award.
AL CY Young: Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers
The only way Skubal does not win this award is if he’s traded into the NL before the trade deadline. Skubal is having a career best year with a commanding 11-3 record, a WHIP below 1 and an ERA of only 2.34. The Tigers have a tough decision to make as Skubal is entering his prime and is only going to be getting better.
NL CY Young: Chris Sale, Atlanta Braves
In one of the closer races of the year, the NL CY Young will come down to who finishes the best down the stretch. It’s a tight race between two former CY Young winners in Chris Sale & Zack Wheeler. Sale holds the edge now with a league leading 13 wins to pair with 140 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA. If Sale wins the CY Young this year, he’ll be one of 8 players all time to win the award in both leagues.
AL Rookie of the Year: Wyatt Langford, Texas Rangers
This is a close race between Wyatt Langford & Luis Gil. The story of a batter vs. a pitcher and who is more deserving. Earlier in the season, Gil had this award locked up, but after a rough month, Gil lost the edge. Meanwhile, Langford has heated up and hit over .300 in June and is still continuing to hit well.
NL Rookie of the Year: Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates
If Skenes debuted earlier in the season, he would most likely be the leader for the CY Young award as well with how strong of a campaign he’s put together. Skenes earned himself not only an all star appearance, but became only the 5th rookie pitcher to ever start an All Star game. Skenes just lost his first game of the season with only allowing 2 runs in the game and it’s his first loss in a game in over a year. Skenes is on pace to have one of the most historic rookie campaigns for a pitcher ever and is a clear lock for this award.
AL Manager of the Year: Stephen Vogt, Cleveland Guardians
It feels strange writing this as Stephen Vogt was a player in the league just a couple years ago. In his first year as manager, he has the Guardians neck and neck for the top spot of the American League with the Baltimore Orioles. This is an incredible feat, especially since the team has been without all star pitcher Shane Bieber all year as he underwent Tommy John surgery.
NL Manager of the Year: Rob Thomson, Philadelphia Phillies
Despite the super team in Los Angeles & last year’s regular season leader in Atlanta, the Phillies currently boast the best record in not only the NL, but the entire MLB. The Phillies are serious World Series contenders and it’s not just due to the talent on their team to thank for that, but also for the leadership from Rob Thomson who’s whipped this team into shape.
